In partnership with Opera Theatre Company, St. Brendan’s National School and Mercy Primary School, Birr Stage Guild is delighted to facilitate and seek funding for this project for 4th Class boys & girls.

‘Bug Off!!!’ by Belfast composer Stephen Deazley is an opera for a children’s chorus and one professional singer (44 children and bass baritone, John Molloy, in this production in Birr!). The project runs over 7 weeks, with the children learning the story and songs and making masks in school with their teachers. OTC has also engaged Mr. Enda O'Connor to work with the children during this time.

A training day for 4th class teachers took place on January 10th in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, with composer Stephen Deazley, Opera Theatre Company’s designer, the stage director and Adam Wallace, Opera Theatre Company’s education and outreach officer.

During the final week, March 3rd – 7th, between 10am & 3pm, the children and teachers will work in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre with OTC’s full team – the composer, director, designer, pianist and singer. On Friday 7th March there will be 2 performances of the 40 minute opera, at 1.30pm and 7.30pm.

The BUG OFF!!! opera project has never taken place in the 26 counties; as an Irish Premier it should attract widespread interest..
